At the moment, Agents of SHIELD season 4 is featuring a villain that we never quite expected to see in this or any other universe — Leo Fitz. Given that he is so beloved a character, the idea of him being some sort of nefarious villain is almost unheard of. Yet, the version within the Framework is the #2 of Madame Hydra, and to make matters worse, he also just murdered Agnes. He’s left a trail of destruction, and you really don’t know what he’s going to do next or who the upcoming target will be.
What we do know is that if Simmons or anyone else is going to get him to become his former self, it’s not going to be easy. After all, we are dealing with a side of Fitz at the moment who doesn’t quite know or understand that he is doing anything wrong.
Speaking on this subject further in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, show executive producers Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen passed along the following quotes on the subject of his actions:
“The doctor doesn’t see his actions as being out of line … This version of Fitz is clearly capable of horrendous acts, but it is unclear whether not he’s capable of remorse.”
What we wonder is if the Framework versions of all of these characters have a tipping point, whether it is one that is clear or one that is made clear over time, where their true selves start to slowly become apparent. We saw Phil Coulson start to figure that out, and he’s far from the only character who has. Yet, with Fitz either he is repressing on some extreme level what he’s been through to date, or he just hasn’t hit the threshold yet where he will start to remember. Maybe this is one of those Once Upon a Time fairy-tale things where Simmons has to go and kiss him before everything ends the way that it should.
New episodes of Agents of SHIELD will be coming your way still Tuesday, and all signs point towards this one in particular being a big one for Evil Fitz as more and more of the pieces start to come together regarding who he is.
